for Concert Band
K. Cato, 2017
I’ve recently composed a Symphony for my good friend Ken Rawdon who recently retired from teaching at Mt. Eden HS in 2017.
The piece is titled The Great Divide and it’s a general interpretation of what I think happens when one departs from their life in the work force and begins a new chapter in the world of retirement.
I wanted to honor his decades of unbreakable commitment to the community of Hayward and pay homage to the limitless inspiration Ken gave to the youth as he fiercely embodied and honed the incredible spirit of the Mt. Eden Choir.
As such, the composition contains five movements each reflecting different aspects of Ken’s wonderful personality, inexhaustible drive, and creative genius. (Have you seen what he’s done to the cafeteria each year? The transformation is incredible! The countless hours he unselfishly put in. Equally extraordinary!)
